When Palestinian oud player Samir JOubran heard the jazz/rock/flamenco guitar sound of Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucia, and John McLaughin, he was inspired to create a similar beyond-traditional approach for his instrument. The Oud is a 4-000 Year-old Arabic lute with a body shaped like half a pear, with up to 13 strings and a neck that bends back toward the musician at a sharp angle.
The Nazarteh-born, 30- something Samir teamed up with his two 20- something oud-playing brothers as Le Trio Joubran and self–released Randana, a five second, mostly instrumental effort with cuts ranging 5 to 18 minutes length. Melding Arabic and Indian classical music, Spanish flamenco
